A chip off the old pot
Thu. September 17, 2015
I have been a spongeware collector for many years now. My interest began when I bought my first Emma Bridgewater mug. It was too many years ago to remember exactly when or which pattern I bought first, but I remember being enthralled with the simplicity of the design. I then discovered Brixton Pottery in Wales and Nicholas Moss’s pottery in Ireland. It was Tim who introduced me to old spongeware with his wonderful collection mixed in with bits of Buckley pottery, mocha ware treen and metal ware (including horse brasses, but lets not go there!). We have pieces that stand alone, although most of our collection sits on every spare shelf or surface. We are still devotees of newly made dishwasher proof spongeware which gets used every day and although our collecting of old spongeware has slowed down in recent years, we still manage to keep the odd piece. We’ve been fortunate enough to buy three collections of spongeware this year, some of which have already found new homes. Its good to know there are still some passionate collectors of this delightful household pottery out there.
