Initialled Welsh grease horn sold
A 19th century Welsh grease horn, stamped twice with owners initials “T A”.

During the harvest, reaping hooks and scythes had to be kept sharp, a wooden strickle was covered with grease (which was kept in a horn) and then sprinkled with sand – This was then rubbed on the blade to achieve a sharp cutting edge.
